Here's some of my work.

Editorial Training

Need to update your skills? Want to learn how you can use free Google tools to enhance your news gathering, reporting and storytelling? Yes, yes you do.

I'm a trainer with the Society of Professional Journalists, powered by the Google News Lab, offering no-cost Google training to newsrooms, media conferences and other journalism organisations.  I've trained hundreds of journalists in everything from advanced search techniques and verification to quick and easy visualisations, including Google Trends, Public Data Explorer, Google Scholar, Google Maps, and Google Earth Pro.

To find out more, get in touch or apply for training via the SPJ website.

Editorial Consulting

I offer advice, consulting and coaching on a smorgasbord of different subjects, from freelancing and social media, to podcasting and new platforms.

With a background covering cutting-edge media innovations, interviewing editorial and development staff at some of the world's biggest news organisations, and testing literally hundreds of new platforms, tools, and apps – in both the UK and the US – I am uniquely placed to give reliable insights and useful feedback on whatever new venture you have in mind.

I've worked with startups, app developers, academic institutions, and non-profits, as well as other journalists, to share my expertise. Here are a few of my favourite projects so far:

  • Developing design and UX on a beta stage Twitter app.
  • Designing a digital journalism programme for students at a UK university.
  • Teaching non-profits and business owners how to improve their reach and engagement through blogging and social media.
  • Helping event organisers find diverse, yet brilliant, speakers for their next conference.

Want to discuss your next project? Get in touch and let's grab a coffee, pick up the phone, and see how we can work together.

About me

I'm a British freelance journalist living in Denver, Colorado, who writes for The Guardian, Rolling Stone, Vice, People, and 5280 Magazine, among others. Though I've covered many topics during my 10-year journalism career, I'm now focusing on social justice, immigration and gender equality.

As a trainer with the Society of Professional Journalists, sponsored by the Google New Lab, I teach journalists around the US to teach how to use Google tools to enhance their news gathering, reporting and storytelling. (Find out more here.)

Previously technology editor at Journalism.co.uk, I got my start as a local reporter and went on to manage digital teams at two of the UK's biggest regional news groups. I hold a Masters in journalism from City University, London, for which I was awarded a scholarship from the Scott Trust, the company that owns the Guardian.

I like hiking, yoga, books, beer, and binging on Netflix – not necessarily in that order. I tinker with web design and built this site myself. I'm also working on my first book.
